Many years ago I decided to run for a local School Board position but had no experience in politics. I was introduced to a local city commissioner who took me under her wing and gave me 4 months of her life to provide me with her insight and time to connect with the constituents in the district. She stressed the fact that a true political leader is one whose only interest is those of her constituents, which can be very difficult in an atmosphere historically known for giving political favors. She believed that elected representatives should serve in a selfless manner with the knowledge that they often have to fight a tough fight for the right reasons. A battle, for the right reasons, is worthwhile even if you don't win the fight. I admire her for her commitment to true public service and I honor her memory with this "Hero Story".

We've all had people in our lives who have made a positive impact on us. A parent or grandparent, a sibling who was there for us, or maybe even just a guy who shines shoes for a living? Whoever they are, tell us their story so they can inspire us even more.
