The premier Latin ballplayer of the 50s and 60s, Roberto had triumphed over discrimination and had very little left to prove. But on New Years Eve rather than celebrate with friends, he choose to accompany a plane load of desperately needed supplies to the earthquake victims of Nicaragua. He lost his life that night but the name Clemente now stands for "Character." He is remembered for his selfless love of his fellow humans more than his deadly accurate throwing arm, or his grace in National League outfields, or even for this 2 world series victories. He continues to be a model for all major league players and fans.
