A hero is usually associated with a person who does something extraordinary and good; it's someone who inspires people to move forward or helps them do better. My hero is not a person. My hero cannot speak, but the words that it tells me save me day after day. My hero cannot move, yet it takes me to far places. My hero cannot see, yet it shows me everything. My hero cannot heal, but it is the reason I'm alive. Books are most commonly read to get rid of boredom or because a class requires it, but I read to remind myself that even though things are hard, there is a way to move on. Nothing good lasts forever, but bad things don't last forever either. I never had a real home, my dad and I would live with family or his girlfriend at the time. We would move from house to apartment to trailer time after time and the only thing that kept me sane was reading. When I got depression my dad denied it and said I just wanted attention, I never ate, never left my room, I would stare at the ceiling for hours upon hours and just dug myself a hole deeper and deeper into misery. My friends were worried, I no longer laughed or smiled and I stopped reading. I would talk about how I thought I should just die because "really who needs or would want me." My close friend bought me a book, one I had read before but I never owned, I remembered the story line and decided I would see if it interested me again. As I read I realized how real the story was. I realized the only way for me to be me again I had to try to live, I had to fight and be happy and even when I'm sad, I had to think of the things that made me jubilant. Reading this one book didn't heal my depression, but it helped me realize I needed to try. I'm still working on fixing myself along with my friends and my hero is motivating me to push through.

We've all had people in our lives who have made a positive impact on us. A parent or grandparent, a sibling who was there for us, or maybe even just a guy who shines shoes for a living? Whoever they are, tell us their story so they can inspire us even more.
