If I asked you to define what makes a good role model, I’m sure that most people would have a pretty good idea of some specific defining qualities. Based on these ideas we’ve conjured about what a role model is, many people have chosen to idolize people in the media, whether they are celebrities, sports personalities, actors, singers or any number of different famous faces. There is a long list of people who have achieved great things and even more people who set their sights on becoming like them. This isn’t a bad thing by any means, some of my own idols include those such as Sandra Bullock or Johns Hopkins. Although celebrity role models have a platform to influence hundreds of people, the person who may influence you the most can be found within your everyday life. My greatest role model is Emily Selner, an extremely caring individual who dedicates her time to helping others. She has given away the most expensive thing in the world, her time.
Emily has always focused her time on helping others in need and assisting them with their projects or even their troubles. She sets an example for everyone to focus on other people before themselves. Emily embodies what it means to be generous and caring. She has never abandoned anyone when they needed help. Even when others have given up, she encourages them to persevere. Emily has inspired me to join several co-curricular and extra-curricular clubs that dedicate their time to assisting others. She has been the most prominent motivator and role model in my life. Her sweet disposition and care for others is infectious, being around her makes me a better person. For this, she is an inspiration.
Emily is excellent at giving transparent feedback. Delivering constructive criticism can be very difficult because some people don’t take criticism well. There is a difference between telling someone that they suck and giving them good examples of how they can improve. Emily has mastered giving people constructive advice and helping them become better, stronger people. For this, she is an inspiration.
We all understand time is valuable. When you take time out of your day to help a friend or even a stranger, they remember it. Emily embodies a quote by Maya Angelou that I love very much, “people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Emily has always spent her time caring for people and making them feel strong, competent, and needed. For this, she is an inspiration.
Helping others isn’t always easy. It can sometimes derail your schedule and cost you time, money and other resources. Emily proves that helping others isn’t a burden. Although she doesn’t have “celebrity status”, she has the innate ability to influence people by helping everyone she encounters.
