It was late at night after working as referrees for a High School basketball game, that my husband and another referee stopped in at a 24-hour convenience store and asked to cash the High School's single paycheck so they could split their earnings. The elderly woman working at the till agreed to cash the local check, but mis-counted the cash and gave them $20 extra back. When the two men counted out and split their money they discovered they each had $10.00 too much. My husband's junior partner thought they should just keep the extra money...like a windfall. But my husband explained that the money didn't just appear out of thin air--it might even be taken out of the poor clerk's next paycheck, and it was just an innocent mistake. Additionally, he explained that his good name was worth far more than $10.00, and he wouldn't keep something that wasn't his or disrespect himself for any amount.
They both went back inside and explained to the clerk that she had overpaid them. The elderly clerk was surprised they had returned. But she was also so relieved that she wiped a tear off her face as they were leaving.
