One day at practice in the gym that is as big as my house. I was our daily warm up of free throws. I overheard one of my teammates talking about how she never got to play a lot of our games. I go over to listen a little bit more, “Coach is always playing the same five people every game” she exclaimed. Other players on the team were agreeing with her, “You should do something” they told her. It reminded me of how I was also having the same problem till my brother called one day.
I just finished a game 16-28 which was worse then being punched in the gut, it was against West high. I looked across the court to meet my moms’ eye of disappointment. I never got off the bench for the 3rd game in a row now. I walked trying to hold back my tears as my coach yells for losing AGAIN. Then I get in the car and drove home, I didn’t want to ride back on the bus to school.
I go on facebook that night and complained about my coach and how we lose whenever she plays the same five people each quarter of the game. I suddenly start to cry as I realize that maybe im terrible at basketball. Then all of a sudden my phone rings… its Dakota my brother I tell him “I got to go call me tomorrow”.
The next day after practice I get home and await his call. Finally, my phone rings and I answer. “Sorry about basketball sis” he said with sadness in his voice. I smiled and say “It’s ok I might quit.” It got silent and the finally, “Sis you can quit… Basketball has been your dream yeah your coach is not right for playing all girls but you need to show her your better then the five she always plays… Don’t quit.” After awhile of silence he says “I love you please don’t quit I have to go.” The next practice I try harder and do best and show off my skills. Even though I worked hard I realized that ill be ok and play more eventually.
I pull the girl to the side. “Look if you try hard enough you will show coach how amazing you are.” She realized it to and gave me hug. Now whenever I see her in the halls I always tell her “Save the best for last.” This is why my brother is my hero.
