A couple of days ago the maintenance worker for our building, Dwayne, approached a coworker and I as we were chatting in the morning. Our building has a little restaurant in the basement and the woman who works at the checkout, Bertha, had recently lost her home and was about to be put out on the street after the living arrangements she made fell through. It was plain to see that Dwayne thought a lot of Bertha; he described her as someone with a heart of gold who would reach out to anyone should they need it. His voice trembled as he told us her story and how he was going to go around the building to collect donations for her. I found an envelope for him, put some money inside and wished him the best.
Later that day Dwayne was back in our office suite. He had raised over $1000 for Bertha and people also offered to donate furniture and other household items to her. While I am moved by the generosity of my colleagues, Dwayne was the catalyst for the charity she received. He's a wonderful man and, to me, a true hero.

We've all had people in our lives who have made a positive impact on us. A parent or grandparent, a sibling who was there for us, or maybe even just a guy who shines shoes for a living? Whoever they are, tell us their story so they can inspire us even more.
