My father is my hero. He was a German immigrant who came to this country in 1924. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps when WWII broke out to fight for the country he'd grown to love. He was wounded in battle and his best friend died beside him. Although we have newspaper clippings stating he was awarded the Purple Heart, he never received his medal. Since the early 1980's I have been writing to Presidents, Senators and various government agencies...no one seems to care. But my father was never one to toot his own horn, so he never fought for his Purple Heart. I had taken up that fight, but he passed away in 1970. I wanted the plaque in the Court of Honor to show his Purple Heart, but to this day, he has not been recognized. My father was a great American and he was the most important person in my life.

We've all had people in our lives who have made a positive impact on us. A parent or grandparent, a sibling who was there for us, or maybe even just a guy who shines shoes for a living? Whoever they are, tell us their story so they can inspire us even more.
