James was only ten when his family moved him to a new state, far from his friends and the rest of his family. His dad had no regular employment in the new place, so food was scarce. Education was not seen as very important, only survival. Our father became a drug addict and dealer, and our mother suffered from alcoholism, dying when James was only 24 years old. With a father in and out of jail, James had to make sure that he got his own education and established his own career. Nevertheless, James did complete his education, achieving a college degree. He became an EMT, keeping a promise he made to our mother before she died. He holds high standards and demonstrates his love for others every day, selflessly rescuing others and training his team to be rescuers. Although he never saw what a "real family" looked or acted like, James (who likes to be called Jim now) has his own family. His wife and daughter are the joy of his life, a life that gives to others every day and loves wholeheartedly without question. He is an inspiration to all who know him and the story of where he came from, and he is and always will be my "baby brother".

We've all had people in our lives who have made a positive impact on us. A parent or grandparent, a sibling who was there for us, or maybe even just a guy who shines shoes for a living? Whoever they are, tell us their story so they can inspire us even more.
