Megan Hayes was my best childhood friend. We met at our dad’s softball tournament. It started by a group of us all playing tag. Megan asked one of the bratty little boys if she could play. The boy told her no. Megan asked why and he told her that she couldn’t play because she was in a wheel chair. Megan had Spinal Bifida; Megan couldn’t feel anything from the waist down. Megan was born with Spinal Bifida, and was told she would never be able to walk. I ended up telling the boy that he needed to go play with someone else because I wanted Megan to play. After that Megan and I were inseparable. We always were laughing, and having a good time. She never made me think about her not being able to walk. Megan acted just like any other kid I knew. She never complained. The only time Megan ever did was when she was hungry. Megan loved M&M’s. She could smell a bag of them opening from across the room. Megan was always full of happiness. She loved life so much. She loved so many people. She had the best attitude. Megan never let anything bring her down. She was so brave. Megan was an angel to me. Megan went through surgery after surgery. Megan never once let it get her down. When Megan and I were both 11, she passed away. We found out over a phone call and my family rushed to the hospital were we said good bye. Megan’s funeral was on a very sunny day, and there was a smiley faced balloon attached to her coffin. That’s how I will always remember Megan, as a happy loving person. Whenever I start to feel sorry for myself I am ashamed. Whenever I don’t feel good enough, I know that Megan would think I was. Whenever I am lonely I think of her. I always keep her in my heart. I will never forget Megan Hayes. Megan is my hero. Megan is in heaven now and she’s an angel.

We've all had people in our lives who have made a positive impact on us. A parent or grandparent, a sibling who was there for us, or maybe even just a guy who shines shoes for a living? Whoever they are, tell us their story so they can inspire us even more.
