Courage comes in many forms and Charlie Becker exemplifies all of them. In 1979, Charlie not only had the courage to pursue his own dreams, but also united a community to pursue a collective goal. Today Charlie and his team inspire children and adults with special needs to be courageous at a camp aptly named, "Camp Courageous."
Charlie Becker's vision for this camp has helped transform what started as donated land and buildings, into a state-of-the-art facility that hosts over 6,000 campers annually. With no government funding, Charlie has inspired a small Iowa community to come together to fund this special camp through their own charity and generosity. Not only does Charlie go out and shake each individual’s hand that supports the camp and volunteers, but donors from all different walks of life, ages, backgrounds, and cultures have been touched by the message that Charlie shares with them, “that we are more alike than we are different.” His charisma and passion have opened doors for Camp Courageous, which make every dream seem possible.
With a backbone of fundraisers that range from a pancake and omelet breakfast, to a Gala, to an event which hosts over 25,000 motorcyclists and vendors, to a triathlon, and so many more, Charlie has united many hands, all to provide adults and children with special needs a place where they feel like they can do anything.
Charlie is tireless in his journey to get the word out about camp and his spirit is contagious. He has helped to build a staff that exudes positivity, compassion and strives to give campers the best possible experience. He truly believes that “all people, regardless of ability level, have the right to opportunities found in the world around them.”
Charlie’s passion and courage have built a place, where EVERYTHING needed is given. And where individuals of all ages with disabilities are challenged to try new experiences and develop enhanced self-esteem that carries over into their everyday lives. Courage… Pass It On!
