My niece, Brooke, is a hero to me as well as to others. When she was 18 years old, she found that she was pregnant. She made the selfless decision to share her child through adoption to a beautiful family who was able to provide a more stable life than she believed she could do. She felt that she could not only not afford it financially, but also was not equipped emotionally to be a good parent. This was a very courageous and selfless decision.
The adoption is an open adoption and due to my close relationship with Brooke, I have been included on several occasions as a part of their family--his birthday, First Communion and several pro-life activities that he and his family participate in.
I know that Brooke has difficult days from time to time -- especially on his birthday, despite the fact that he was born 13 years ago. I just try to remind her again and again what a loving, selfless thing it was and that it is such a joy and privilege to get to be a part of his life.

We've all had people in our lives who have made a positive impact on us. A parent or grandparent, a sibling who was there for us, or maybe even just a guy who shines shoes for a living? Whoever they are, tell us their story so they can inspire us even more.
