When I was 35, I was diagnosed with cancer. It was a nightmare. While you instantly slip into "poor me" or "why me" mode, times like these can also remind you of just how many people care about you and at a time of need, how many people will come out of the woodwork. Sadly, it sometimes takes a drastic event to realize this.
Learn from my experience, and know that those special people are out there. These are people from your friends, family, work, church or neighborhood, and they really do care about you.
I'm doing fine now. In fact, I'm better than I was back then. I was lucky enough to get a reality check: A reminder to live every day, to value relationships and to appreciate the little things.
My Advice: Kiss your spouse and kids often because you never know what will happen. Pick up the phone and call that old friend that you've lost contact with. Send your grandparents and/or your parents a "just because" card.
Don't wait for a reality check, live your life while you can!

We've all had people in our lives who have made a positive impact on us. A parent or grandparent, a sibling who was there for us, or maybe even just a guy who shines shoes for a living? Whoever they are, tell us their story so they can inspire us even more.
