I reside in a sketchy part of Connecticut. There are a lot of people, especially among the young adults, who try to be all gangster-like, and everyone is out for themselves.
I was coming home one day and there was a elderly lady in her eighties (whom I might add always waves to everyone, and greets them with a smile and a friendly "hi" but lives by herself) who was out mowing her lawn. All of a sudden this young man of only 17 or so went over to her and offered to help mow her lawn.
I passed by the house again later on that day, and he had three of his friends there with him. Together they were all taking care of the elderly lady's yard work for her.
To live in a hard-knock place, and see that there are still values that people believe in and live up to, is so rare. I hope that we all can learn from this example and remember the age-old saying of "respect and help thy elders."

We've all had people in our lives who have made a positive impact on us. A parent or grandparent, a sibling who was there for us, or maybe even just a guy who shines shoes for a living? Whoever they are, tell us their story so they can inspire us even more.
