I moved from a small town to a big city and was on my own for the first time in my life about to start dental school. I didn't have a single friend and was homesick. To make matters worse, someone in the class started picking on me for no apparent reason. She made fun of my background, my residence (which was infested with cockroaches), and humiliated me in front of others whenever she had the chance. I guess I was just an easy target. It went on and on for two years but in my third year I got sick and at the same time I heard her father died suddenly. I got her a card and sent it from the hospital telling her how sorry I was that her father had died and that if she ever needed a shoulder to cry on I would be there for her. I also said that I wasn't well enough to go to the funeral but had I been, well, I would have gone. When I got back to school she came over to me and thanked me for my card and we just started sobbing. She never explained her actions to me but from then on she was always my friend.

We've all had people in our lives who have made a positive impact on us. A parent or grandparent, a sibling who was there for us, or maybe even just a guy who shines shoes for a living? Whoever they are, tell us their story so they can inspire us even more.
