Ashley Craig is a student at Sussex Middle School in Sussex, New Jersey. A year or so ago she noticed how much her parents were spending on school supplies for her and her siblings. She knew that there were students in our district that could not possibly afford these.
Trying to figure out how to help those others she came up with the idea of donating items to our school. She asked friends and those on her soccer team and ended up with several bins of supplies; pens, pencils, notebooks, paper, etc. (even some backpacks).
As a member of the Sussex Middle School Builders Club (a service club of Kiwanis International) Ashley asked me how we could not only distribute them but get many more needed supplies. She put together a wonderful power point presentation with information and statistics and shared it at a recently held Builders Club meeting (7/15/09.
We will be soon packaging what we have into bundles that coincide with our school "Back to School" supplies. In our district there are 3 schools with over 500 students in each.
At Back to School night (September)and Conferences (November) we will ask parents to donate items. Most probably we will hold a Spirit Day to collect from students, too.
Last year, as a 7th grader, Ashley was a Student of the Month. She deserved it for many reasons; most of all her good character and caring for others.
Lean On Us is a program she is passionate about and I know she will continue her good deeds throughout her life.
Thank you.

We've all had people in our lives who have made a positive impact on us. A parent or grandparent, a sibling who was there for us, or maybe even just a guy who shines shoes for a living? Whoever they are, tell us their story so they can inspire us even more.
