I have a very happy story to share to day that truly demonstrates how a little kindness can go a long way:
A close family friend of mine has a special needs child named Jeremy. He's a very sweet, loving, teenage boy who gets to attend our local High School - although he is in "special" classes for children with disabilities. I really admire Jeremy, he has been teased for countless years by numerous children- but no matter what he is always happy!
But thanks to a popular high school senior, the teasing has stopped. Katie, who has always been a popular high school senior was in a pickle. She was in the Prom Court - in the running to be prom queen but she didn't know who she wanted to take with her. She had a lot of boys asking her and she didn't know who to pick. One day at lunch she decided to sit alone and decide who to take with her when Jeremy came to sit with her. The two of them started talking and found out that they had a lot in common. Without worrying about what her friends would say she immediately invited Jeremy to be her prom date.
I was excited to hear from Jeremy's mother the day after Prom. Katie was announced Prom Queen and Jeremy was even presented his own crown.
Things have slowly changed at the high school - Jeremy, as well as his other disabled classmates, are now being accepted and treated as equals.
Katie truly is an everyday angel. I hope there are more girls out there like you. Thanks!
