I love to sing, but was afraid to go up in front of everyone. I met my best friend in choir class and she was very friendly. She looked at me and said, “Hi! My name is Hanin, what’s your name?” I replied, “Hi… my name is Stephanie.” She was the first person I sang to, besides my family. Hanin asked me, “Can you sing?” I was surprised when she asked me. I didn’t know what to say or what to do, what if I told her I did but, she asked me to sing to her! I said, “Do you want to hear me sing?” I sang to her and she said I had a really good voice. I had butterflies in stomach and was super happy.
The next day the whole class is singing. When I heard there was part for a solo, I wanted to tryout so badly. Hanin said, “You have to try out! I’m sure of it that you’re going to get the part.” So I practiced everyday like there was no tomorrow. I even recorded myself to hear how I was singing and let me tell you… it did not sound pretty but I couldn’t just stop trying. One week has passed and the day is finally here. I was nervous by the time I sat in my chair. My classmates who had tried out had beautiful voices, but I was sure my hard work would pay off.
Mrs. Gillette, who is my choir teacher, called out my name. I stood up out of my chair to the front and felt like I couldn’t breathe. The class looked like hungry sharks about to munch me down. I took deep breathes, I sang, closed my eyes and when I opened. Hanin gave me two thumbs up and a big smile, which is what I needed. Everyone clapped and was cheerful, it made me really happy. It felt like a dream come true and you know what… that dream came true. It’s all thanks to Hanin, my best friend and hero, who helped me conquer my fear.
Today is the day the solo is going to be announced. I cross both my fingers, shaking in my chair. Hanin is telling me, “Don’t worry you’re going to get the part!” So stop shaking like a grandma!” I look at her with nervous face and say, “I’m not worrying, it’s called being nervous! And by the way I’m not shaking my feet just fell asleep!” Mrs. Gillette is about to announce who got the solo and she says my name! I am so excited! It feels so unreal, like I am walking down the red carpet and the class was the paparazzi.
Never in my life, would I ever see myself singing in front a lot… well not whole lot of people but, still lots to me. I could never picture myself singing in front of that crowd but, I did and I am so proud of myself. I could not have done it without my best friend/ hero. Without her I wouldn’t have even thought about trying out but, I did and I’m super proud. She is my hero, who encouraged me to reach for my dream and never left my side and gave me advice. I would like to encourage people to reach for their dreams and NEVER GIVE UP!
