I was very young when I got married and came to live in a quiet street where there were sets of four houses. I lived on the first floor and the ground floor was inhabited by one of the most caring ladies I have ever come across. At first, we didn't talk to each other, but slowly and steadily our friendship grew. She was nearing fifty years of age, but this difference in our ages had nothing to do with our friendship. She taught me to cook fantastic dishes and introduced me to our other neighbours.
When I was pregnant with my first daughter, she gave me good solid advice on how to take care of me and my unborn child. My husband, a doctor was very busy and often had night duty. On such nights, my dear friend would send her daughter to give me company so that I wouldn't be lonely. She was the one who got my daughter admitted to a nearby nursery school saying she was too small to go to a far away school.
After two years, I was pregnant with my second baby. My friend took care of the elder one by taking her to the bus stop from where the school bus would pick her up and she was again present at the stop to bring her back. In fact, she got my daughter's ear pierced saying I could rest while she would comfort my crying daughter. My second baby was also looked after, given bath etc by my dear friend. Whenever I had to go out shopping or visiting relatives, the Good Samaritan was there to look after my kids, feed them give them bath put them to sleep and tolerate their naughtiness.
Now, when she is no more, I can't help thanking God for providing me with an angel who still lives in my heart. I am proud to acknowledge the fact that she was more than a mother to me.

We've all had people in our lives who have made a positive impact on us. A parent or grandparent, a sibling who was there for us, or maybe even just a guy who shines shoes for a living? Whoever they are, tell us their story so they can inspire us even more.
