He opened Back in the Game Sports, a sports consignment shop, in 2020. Shortly after opening, a soldier and his wife walked in looking to purchase a bike for their young child. He overheard the couple anxiously debating the cost of the bike, and Robbie instinctively gave it to the couple for free.
“Everyone was crying, and the rush of that feeling told me that that was the way that life was really supposed to be,” Robbie said.
Since that day, Robbie has furthered his mission of helping struggling families. To date, he has distributed more than 12,000 bicycles.
“The kindness is worth more to me than the profit,” he said.
Robbie accepts donated bikes and purchases others at garage sales. He then refurbishes them to near-new condition before giving them away. When restored to working order, Robbie lists the bikes on social media channels. He then leaves the free bikes outside his shop where families can simply pick up and go.
Most days, 20 free bikes will line the sidewalk in front of the shop. Most go to local families, but some have traveled as far as the Dominican Republic.
Prior to opening the sporting goods store, Robbie made his living selling copy machines. He decided to leave that corporate job to do something he really enjoyed, and he said he has never been healthier or happier. Robbie has found his own unique way to give back to his community and hopes others will follow his lead.
The Foundation for a Better Life and PassItOn believe that Robbie Jacobs is a hero. His kindhearted action is a great example of the value of generosity. Please help us celebrate Robbie by sharing his inspiring story.
